Initial Consultation Preparation

When working with a therapist “fit” is very important. Research studies have shown the therapeutic relationship clients develop with their therapist is one of the most important elements to achieving a successful outcome. While the skill level and experience of the therapist should be considered, the connection between the client and therapist is vital.

It is for this reason I encourage all prospective clients to take advantage of my offer of a free 15-minute consultation. In this way you can make an informed decision about whether I am the right therapist for you.

Questions I May Ask You

I will typically start off the call with a few questions to get to know you better, so I can make sure I’m qualified to meet your specific needs. This includes questions about why you want to see a therapist, how you’ve been feeling over the past few weeks, and your goals for therapy.

Here are some questions I typically ask on the initial call:

  • Why are you considering therapy now?
  • Have you been in therapy before?
  • If yes, what worked in the past, and what didn’t?
  • What are you looking for in a therapist?
  • What issue(s) do you want to address in therapy?
  • What do you want to gain from therapy?
  • How do you intend to pay for therapy?

PLEASE NOTE: If you plan to use your health insurance benefits, know that I am considered an out-of-network provider. I can provide you with the necessary documentation to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.

After I ask you questions, I welcome the opportunity to answer your questions about me and my psychotherapy practice. Use this time to get informed. I want you to have an idea of what to expect should we decide to work together.

Questions You May Want to Ask Me
